History
A Brief History of Turkish Association of Urology
The foundations of Turkish Urology were laid in 1909. However it gained its true identity after the year 1923, i.e. beginning from the foundation of Turkish Republic. The young Turkish Urology was founded in 1933 with the aim of congregation as a society and stating its presence. As it is well known urologic matters were considered a part of surgery branches for a long time. However some specific features of urology and its different surgical methods became rapidly accepted as a separate field. Two chairs were established, one at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and the other at Gülhane Military Medical Academy followed by the establishment of urology clinics at the Vakıf Gureba Hospital and at other state hospitals.
Urologists working heart and soul to spread the name “urology” desired to come together and to establish an association, to issue a regular publication and to announce the name of Turkish Urology to the entire world. With this aim and based on Article A of the Law on Associations numbered 3512, 14 urologists in Istanbul came together and founded Turkish Association of Urology on the 23rd of January 1933. Following are the founding members of the association in alphabetical order:
Ali Eşref Gürsel, Bahattin Lütfi Varnalı, Besim Eneren, Behçet Sabit Erduran, Fevzi Taner, Fuat Hamid Bayer, Fuat Kamil Beksan, Hakkı Rüştü Hasip, İhsan Arif Derman, Mehmet Ali Oma, Saim Ahmet Erkun, Suphi Şenses, Veli Canidis. These 14 founding members elected the first board of directors.
In the year 1939 some articles of statute of the association were amended. The number of members reached 30. First board of directors consisted of President Behçet Sabit Erduran, Vice- President Fuat Kamil Beksan, General Secretary Ali Eşref Gürsel, Accountant Bahattin Lütfi Varnalı, and Meeting Secretary Fuat Hamid Bayer.
The membership number of the association were 14 in 1933, 330 in 1975, 103 in 1977, and 128 in 1978, and had reached 1100 members as of 2006. The statute of association was modified in 1939 and the statute was written again in 1973 owing to the law numbered 1630. In 1975, the name of the association was changed to “Turkish Association of Urology”. In 1984 a new statute of association was composed and the name “Turkish” was added to the name of the association. This repetition was made in all associations statutes due to the modification of Law on Associations in 1980. In 1996 the number of members of the board of directors was raised to 7 with the modification of the statute and the issue of holding elections for association every 2 years was added to the statute. The Turkish Association of Urology publishes a journal named “The Turkish Journal of Urology” which has up until now published 32 volumes. Furthermore the association has carried out 19 international congresses. The Association continues its work for the development and progress of Turkish Urology.
